Classic Tracks: The Romantics' "What I Like About You"
By Gary Eskow

Dec 1, 2006 12:00 PM

“…Today, when each tossed mane seems market-tested, it may be hard to recall a time when everything about a band was an honest reflection of the environment that spawned them, the territory they were staking out, or both. In fact, by the late 1970s, when a small herd of misfits formed a group in their hometown of Detroit, those days were already numbered. But The Romantics, strongly influenced by both the British Invasion and the hard rock that sprang from the streets of…”

By DOUG SHEPPARD

“Not even the crappy intro could spoil the Romantics, the third band on the bill. Twenty-two years removed from their occasionally maligned ’80s hits (“Talking in Your Sleep” and “One in a Million”), the reformed, refocused Romantics have returned to their roots as streetwise Detroit rock ’n’ rollers brandishing their MC5, Rationals, and Detroit Wheels influences on their power-pop-stained sleeves. They in fact covered the MC5 (“Tonight”), as well as the Pretty Things -- twice, with “Midnight to Six Man” and “Come See Me.” Propelled by the tiger-toothed drumming of Brad Elvis, the original core of Wally Palmar, Mike Skill, and Coz Canler ripped through the finest cuts from their last album (2003’s underrated 61/49) like the gritty “61/49” and the power pop of “Devil in Me” and “New Kinda Pain.” They also rocked up “Talking in Your Sleep” as if the ’80s never happened and banged out old favorites like “Tom Boy” and “First in Line” (their second single) as if there were no tomorrow. When they drafted Charms bassist Mark Nigro for the triumphant finale of (you guessed it) “What I Like About You,” it was as if the crowd needed to express the song’s sentiment to them.”

What most of the world knows about the Romantics begins and ends with two extremely well-known songs from the early eighties, "What I Like About You" and "Talking in My Sleep." Just the mere mention of those titles is enough to lodge the tunes in your head for days and earn the band a spot in the power-pop hall of fame. What most people don't know is that the group's original members came together in Detroit and were heavily influenced by the primal noise of the MC5 and the Stooges. And they were more than just two-hit wonders-their early albums were actually strong, lust-filled tributes to teen rebellion.

THE ROMANTICS HEADLINE LITTLE STEVEN’S UNDERGROUND GARAGE “BIKINI BEACH PARTY A GO-GO!”

Best Known For their Hit "What I Like About You," The Romantics Join A Rockin' Lineup, Replacing DKT(MC5), Whose Bassist Was Injured In A Motorcylce Accident.

HOLLYWOOD, FL and TAMPA, FL – May 24, 2006 – The Romantics (www.romanticsdetroit.com), one of the most influential and memorable classic rock bands of all time, will be performing at Little Steven’s Underground Garage “Bikini Beach Party A Go-Go!” Memorial day weekend concerts. Famous for hits like party anthem “What I Like About You” and other classics such as “Talking In Your Sleep” and “One in a Million,” The Romantics emanated from one of music’s most important periods and are back on the scene, supporting the revival of “garage band rock.”

Headlining the two-day, two-city event, The Romantics join a cast of bands from all over the nation, including The Gants – “Mississippi Mersey Beat,” The Hate Bombs – “Florida’s legendary garage band reunion,” Supersuckers – “outlaw garage out of Tucson,” and The Holograms – “Los Angeles’ hottest female rockers.” Located poolside at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino, the concert begins at 2:00pm on Sunday, May 28, 2006, in Hollywood, FL and continues on Monday, May 29, 2006, in Tampa, FL.

The Romantics have spent the first part of 2006 playing concerts worldwide and are preparing to release a new album later this year, which will feature lead singer Wally Palmar and guitarists Mike Skill and Coz Canler; and newly added drummer Brad Elvis. The band comes to Florida on the heels of performing at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum’s “No Speeches, No Tuxes…It’s Only Rock and Roll” annual benefit concert for kids. The next stop for The Romantics is Manitowoc, Wisconsin, where they will headline the annual METRO JAM on Saturday, June 17, 2006, in Washington Park.

The Romantics Receive Detroit Honors for Third Time in Past Decade

The Romantics were awarded Outstanding National/Small Independent Label Recording by the 2004 Detroit Music Awards for 61/49, the quartet’s first full-length studio album in over a decade. Other nominees in the category included Detroit rockers The Go, Electric Six and the techno collaboration Carl Craig’s Detroit Experiment. “The Romantics are honored to be considered for this category and very pleased to win the award,” said Romantics singer Wally Palmar. He adds “especially since there are so many talented bands from Detroit releasing great records that don’t get noticed.” Awards were also presented to the White Stripes and Bob Seger at the April 23rd ceremony held at Detroit’s State Theater.

61/49 has been earning national recognition as well. Rolling Stone gave 61/49 a three-star rating and hailed The Romantics as “elder statesmen of Detroit garage rock.” Musician/actor/radio host Little Steven named 61/49 in his top picks of Detroit albums in 2003. 61/49 showcases “Out of My Mind (Into My Head),” the first single, “Devil In Me” and a few choice covers by The Kinks and The Pretty Things.

The Romantics were also honored by the Detroit Music Awards committee in 1994 in the category of Outstanding Local Pop/Rock Recording for the Made in Detroit E.P and were presented with the Distinguished Achievement Award honoring their musical career and influence in 1999. The Romantics are best known for their 1980’s pop hits “What I Like About You” and “Talking In Your Sleep.”
