Interesting Study on Drummers

Do This. Burn 600 Calories an Hour!

If you want to burn more calories in an hour than running, weight lifting or aerobics, pick up some drum sticks and pound out a beat.

The BBC News reports that playing drums in a rock band requires the extraordinary stamina of a professional athlete, according to researchers from the University of Chichester and the University of Gloucestershire in the United Kingdom.

The study: Over an eight-year period, a team led by Dr. Marcus Smith ran tests on
Clem Burke
, the veteran drummer for Blondie, who provided the beat for such hits as "Heart of Glass," "Atomic" and "Call Me." While he was drumming, Burke was connected to medical equipment that measured his heart rate, oxygen uptake and the levels of lactic acid in his blood.

The results: During a 90-minute concert performance, Burke's heart rate averaged between 140 and 150 beats a minute with peaks at 190 beats, levels that are comparable to top athletes and exceeding the maximum heart rate for a man Burke's age. When Burke drummed for one hour in concert, he burned between 400 and 600 calories. Compare this to running for an hour, which burns 472 calories, weight lifting at 315 calories or aerobics at 413 calories.

The biggest difference between athletes and drummers? Athletes are only expected to perform once or twice a week, while drummers who are on tour perform every night. While British soccer players played 40 to 50 games a year, Burke played 90-minute sets at 100 concerts in one year. "It is clear that their fitness levels need to be outstanding," Smith told the BBC about rock 'n' roll drummers. "Through monitoring Clem's performance in controlled conditions, we have been able to map the extraordinary stamina required by professional drummers."

Edward Winter, a specialist in the physiology of exercise at the University of Sheffield, said that the challenge of playing the drums should not be underestimated. He told the BBC, "Rock drumming in particular is very energetic, and to add to this, these guys are playing in a hot environment--you'll see them literally dripping with sweat."

Here's an idea! Sedentary, overweight kids who don't like to play sports could play the drums.

You know they should have included bass players that like to "pogo" for 2 - 3 hours a night while holding a 15 pound guitar. Plus, we have the extra stress of making sure the drummer doesn't forget what town we are playing in!

Nice study. Glad they choose Clem, because Mick Fleetwood would have made drummers look like Zombies.

No wonder my one kid is so skinny, considering the way he pounds those things constantly when he plays and rehearses. My other kid the guitar player is so animated when he plays, especially now with A Wilhelm Scream, that it is no surprise that he is as skinny as he is as well, and they both have real healthy appetites. It must be nice to have that kind of metabolism.

Jello Biafra, energetic former front man for the Dead Kennedys, routinely lost 5 pounds of body weight per performance.  Who says rockers aren't fit?

I'm sure most of it is water!  Hot lights and leather don't make for a very cool combination! Wink

The second time I got to meet the Romantics was in 1993 in Portland at the La Luna.  I showed Wally a copy of all of the ticket stubs I kept from all of their concerts I had attended over the years.  He remerked that I had stuck with them through the oh so many changes in drummers.  At that momment I so wished I could have auditioned and joined the group.  I think Wally was looking.  But, alas, I have talent as a loyal fan, but not as a durmmer. Undecided
