new member/?? about harmonica solo
Jun 13th, 2006 at 9:19pm

Hello all - As someone who went to college in the early 80's, I've listened to the Romantics for years and years.  Now am in a band (just for fun) that is playing "What I Like About You".  Frankly I would like to do some other songs but we haven't the time (nor the talent) to learn many others.

My question - I am trying to find out what key harmonica we need to use for the harmonica solo in the song - I have one in the key of C and one in E but neither seems to be right - does anyone here have any idea?

Thank you in advance and look forward to seeing you all here in the coming weeks/months.

Welcome coltom!!

That would be a perfect question for our "Ask Wally" thread.
Also feel free to tell us more about yourself like where you are from etc.

I think our most distant message board member is in Chile.  We have a few in Michigan, California, North Carolina, New Jersey, Kentucky, Illinois, Nevada, Texas, Florida so its interesting to learn what part of the country a "newbie" represents!

Again, Welcome Aboard!!

In Wally's words, "The answer lies somewhere between the keys of G and B."  And hopefully, I just quoted that correctly! Wink

actually that's perfect - I did a LOT of looking on the internet today and finally found it late this afternoon - it is A.
Thank you again

by the way, I am in Royersford, PA (45 miles NW of Philadelphia) but I am a Nashville native who moved up here a few years ago.  My wife is from this area (irony upon ironies - my brother's wife is from Philly, my oldest/best friend's wife is from Philly as is his little brother's wife - go figure).  We have three little boys and a baby girl.  I used to rock and roll all nite and party everyday but now I am once a month tops. HA.

I am a HUGE Who fan and love the Romantics, Clash, Pistols, Beatles, etc - Frankly the Romantics helped provide the soundtrack to one of the more enjoyable times in my life.  I can still remember sitting in a friend's old convertible outside the grocery store listening to the Romantics while we were waiting for another friend to come out of the store - funny how you remember those things.  Another band we really liked at that time were The Producers - anyone remember them?  The Romantics, Producers and a misc. tape full of old South Carolina/Myrtle Beach "beach" music were the three tapes we listened to constantly.

Ahhhhh, the Producers--"What's He Got?", "She Sheila", etc.--I've got all their albums!  I used to love that band!

I do too Brew!  Do you have the Coelacanth album?  I think that that album took even longer to be released than 6149 did for the Romantics.

Welcome Coltom!

I do not have that one--I did see the Producers perform a few years ago, when they were selling that album, and the songs I heard done live didn't move me to buy it.  But I have the other 3 (The Producers, You Make The Heat, and even Run For Your Life, which probably only sold a couple thousand).

Timster, how do you like the Coelacanth album?

No way!

Wayne Famous?
Van Temple?
Kyle Henderson?
or Bryan (I can't remember his last name) the drummer?

Solodka, was your friend from Atlanta?

Bryan Holmes is the drummer.  There was also Tim Smith who played bass when Kyle left the band.

Coelacanth sounds to me like it was recorded after You Make the Heat.  It had a little more kick to it than Run For Your Life.  I have to admit that most of the songs don't really stand out, but my favorite song "Trouble With Love" could've been a hit single.  It sounds like something from one of the first two albums.

Did you happen to see the show in Oshkosh back in 2001 when the Producers and the Romantics were on the same bill?  Talk about having your cake and eating it too!

No!   Embarrassed Cry   I missed that!  Was that one of those free Thursday night shows?

I did see the Producers at Summerfest and at Rainbow Summer around that time, though.

Yeah Brew, I believe it was a weekday show, but they charged a really low admission fee.  It was some sort of festival.  I had just seen the Romantics at the Potowonami Casino and two nights later they were in Oshkosh.  The Producers went on around 7 PM and the Romantics followed them around  9 PM.  It doesn't get much better than that!

I can't remember if the Producers played Rainbow Summer & Summfest after that, or if it was the following year.

I did see the Romantics show at the Potawotami Casino--Clem was on drums for that show.  You're right, though--it doesn't get much better than that.
