Calgary Shows Reviewed !  **pics just added!

here is how it went according to one fan who was there:

Twenty plus years after Wally, Mike and Coz last played here, the boys made their triumphant return to these parts. Two shows over two nights at a new venue - the Deerfoot Inn and Casino. Not your typical "rock and roll room", but anytime you can see one of your all time favorite bands in a room where capacity is about 400, you go!

A few observations:

The new material stands up really well. Both nights the setlist was made up of about half a dozen tracks from 61/49, 3 from the debut, 2 from National Breakout, and 3 from In Heat. Wally sang almost all the leads, with Mike taking a verse in What I Like About You, and also singing one other song.

The band opened with Rock You Up - one of a few tracks that Wally played his harmonica on.

Love the fact the boys switch the instruments around. After "Talking in your sleep" (about mid set), Mike strapped on the guitar, Wally switched to bass. Having both lead guitarists of the band play guitars at the same time really punched up the sound. Later, Coz switched to bass for a couple of tracks. The boys all used their signature guitars; Coz with his white Strat and Black Les Paul, Mike with his orange Telecaster, and Wally with his Rickenbacker.

Who is this Brad Elvis guy? Before the show, when I heard there was this new guy on drums, I thought - "he better be good" - especially when you're following in the footsteps of Jimmy Marinos and Clem Burke - two of the best all around drummer/showmen around. Guess what? Brad is literally the love child of Keith Moon and Jack Benny - funny, incredibly talented, and extremely entertaining. Drumsticks bouncing off floor toms, precariously balancing one stick while keeping the beat with the other, in short a very good fit for the band, and more than living up to his predecessors.

In addition to seeing two great shows, I had the pleasure of meeting the guys and hanging out after both shows. Thanks especially to Wally and Brad for conversations that went beyond traditional backstage small talk.

I'm a concertgoer of almost 30 years. There's 2 easy ways to categorize acts that have been on the road for 25 years:

1) An embarassing example of former selves, with no resemblance to what were once better days

or

2) A show that takes you not only back to how great the "old stuff" is, but how still-vibrant and kick ass a band still is.

The Romantics are one of the few acts I've seen that fall 100% into category 2.

Sometimes bands you've enjoyed on record for years don't live up to your expectations. I was a huge fan going into these shows, and if it's possible, I'm a "huger" fan now! I told Wally after the second show it was a true delight to get to see them here in Calgary. Here's hoping they make the next show here sooner than the time between their last visits. Thanks guys!

Right on!  Thanks for that review...I think we all agree that the band is still rockin', maybe better than ever.  It's great to hear it from someone else who hasn't seen the band since their heyday.

OH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm going through severe Romantics withdrawal!!!

The reviewer has reflected my sentiments since seeing them back on stage in 1999... and more recently since Brad has joined the fold. Smiley

Cool....sounds like a great show.  Of course, I wouldn't have expected anything else.   I just sit back and cross my fingers that one day they will make their way back to my neck of the woods.
