The Romantics:  the Florida Connection?
Mar 28th, 2005 at 12:06pm

The Romantics originated in Detroit, Michigan, and are proud of sharing the city of their origin with their fans.  There also seems to be a strong Florida connection to the band, however:

1.  Coz Canler lived in Florida for a time, and I believe this is where he first met the Romantics.

2.  David Petratos, Jimmy Marinos' successor as drummer of the Romantics, also hailed from Florida (I believe).

3.  The IN HEAT album was recorded at a studio in Florida.

4.  The Romantics still play many gigs down in Florida.

What's the origin of the Florida Connection?

I think Ken's right; they met him in Florida, liked him and his playing style, and when things soured with Mike they invited Coz to Detroit for an audition "to see if he could cut it" (Jimmy's words, I believe.) Obviously, Coz more than "cut it," and he joined the band full-time. This was in the early part of the National Breakout tour if I'm not mistaken ... the flipside to (I think) "A Night Like This" is a live version of "Ain't Got You," and prior to the guitar solo Wally wails, "Take it, Coz!"

Oldfriend would have lots of knowledge on this topic, I'd guess.

And I should note that "Ain't Got You" appeared, I believe, on the flip of the PROMO version of "A Night Like This." I'd have to get the 45 out to be sure, but I'm sorta sure. Kinda ...
