"And the Grinch with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow
stood puzzling and puzzling how could it be so?
It came without ribbons. It came without tags.
It came without packages, boxes or bags.
And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore.
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before.
What if Christmas he thought doesn't come from a store.
What if Christmas perhaps, means a little bit more."

"Let Christmas not become a thing
merely of merchant's trafficking.
Of tinsel, bell and holly wreath
And surface pleasure, but beneath
The childish glamour, let us find
Nourishment for heart and mind.
Let us follow kinder ways
Through our teeming human maze,
And help the age of peace to come."

"All the Whos down in Whoville liked Christmas a lot,
but the Grinch, who lived just north of Whoville, did not.
The Grinch hated Christmas -- the whole Christmas season.
Oh, please don't ask why, no one quite knows the reason.
It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight.
Or maybe his head wasn't screwed on just right.
But I think that the best reason of all
may have been that his heart was two sizes too small."

Gals--
thanks for posting some inspirational thoughts by Dr. MLK Jr.... I was in Lansing celebrating Dr. MLK Jr.'s work.  My hubby and I also braved the bitter cold during a march last night!)

I spent Sunday Evening at an incredible performance by the MSU Jazz Band I--- One of the professors, Diego Rivera (Saxophone) wrote a medly piece of Marvin Gaye "protest songs".... The piece must have been at least 45 minutes long and included about 10 songs.... The arrangement was absolutely phenomemal and included vocals, as well as solos by each of the instruments....  Truly an amazing piece of music!  If they ever perform in the Detroit area (with this piece), I will let the locals know-- you will be blown away by the depth of the music!

Here's my contribution for Inspirational Thought of the day....

***************************************************

Lift Every Voice and Sing

Lift every voice and sing, till earth and Heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet,
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered;
Out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears,
Thou Who hast brought us thus far on the way;

Thou Who hast by Thy might, led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee.
Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee.
Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand,
True to our God, true to our native land.

~~James Weldon Johnson
    (music by John Rosamond Johnson)

    Originally written by Johnson for a presentation in celebration of the birthday of Abraham Lincoln.
    This was originally performed in Jacksonville, Florida, by children.
    It is also known as the "Black National Anthem".

Some quotes from Johnny Carson on his final show, May 22, 1992:

``I am taking the applause sign home, putting it in the bedroom.''

(On his sons in the audience and the death of another son, Rick, in a car crash): ``It would have been a perfect evening if their brother Rick had been here with us. But I guess life does what it's supposed to do and you accept it and go on.''

(On then-Vice President Dan Quayle, whose remarks on single mothers and the TV show ``Murphy Brown'' were making headlines): ``I really want to thank him for making my final week so fruitful.''

``And so it has come to this. I am one of the lucky people in the world. I found something that I always wanted to do and I have enjoyed every single minute of it.''

``You people watching, I can only tell you that it's been an honor and a privilege coming into your homes all these years to entertain you. And I hope when I find something I want to do and think you would like, I can come back and (you will be) as gracious in inviting me into your homes as you have been.''

"I bid you a very heartfelt good night.''

Only sick music makes money today.

Friedrich Nietzsche (1844 - 1900)

The way to write American music is simple. All you have to do is be an American and then write any kind of music you wish.

Virgil Thompson

Hell is full of musical amateurs.

George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950)

Every now and then when your life gets complicated and the weasels start closing in, the only cure is to load up on heinous chemicals and then drive like a bastard from Hollywood to Las Vegas ... with the music at top volume and at least a pint of ether.

Hunter S. Thompson

On a more upbeat note...

The happiest people are those who think the most interesting thoughts. Those who decide to use leisure as a means of mental development, who love good music, good books, good pictures, good company, good conversation, are the happiest people in the world. And they are not only happy in themselves, they are the cause of happiness in others.

"Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The trouble-makers. The round heads in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the
status-quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify, or vilify them. But the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do."

Good one bookies....

The squeaky wheel gets the grease-- let's keep squeaking at the Superbowl committee to put our Romantics into next year's halftime show.....

They will be guaranteed a fun show, with no wardrobe malfunctions.... (unless we fans are the ones malfunctioning... LOL)

Wardrobe malfunctions.. Embarrassed...what about the story I heard about the old red leather pants ripping during a show, and the remnants being tossed into the crowd from the stage by a certain bare-legged performer??   Was that Wally?
