Meet The Romantics!
May 24th, 2004 at 2:06pm

OK. This is what I decided. I will shuck all responsibility and pass the buck by leaving it in Bookies hands. I really don't think that Wally and Mike would object to some of the people here getting a copy of this, but I will leave it up to Bookies to tell me what she thinks. Bookies' copy goes out in the mail this week. Again, I  just called this compilation "Meet The Romantics" since I kind of consider it their first album. ALL of the tracks, studio and live, were recorded in the late 70s, before they recorded anything for Nemperor. And now, the track listing!
                       Tell It To Carrie
                        Runnin' Away
                        First In Line
                        Let's Swing
You Really Got A Hold Of My Heart
                            (Jimmy on lead vocals)
                         Little White Lies
                         I Can't Tell You Anything
                         Stick Around
                         No Responsibilities
                             (Mike on lead vocals)
                         Stop Foolin' Around
                          Gimme One More Chance
                          I Hope That You're Satisfied
                          Little White Lies
                             (earliest version)
                          I Can't Tell You Anything
                              (earliest version)

                          BONUS LIVE TRACKS

                          Tallahassee Lassie
                          Hippy Hippy Shake
                          Liar Liar
                          Runnin' Away
                          You Can't Sit Down
                           Gimme One More Chance
                           Tell It To Carrie
Take Me Out Of The Rain
                           Stone Pony
                           What I Like About You
                           Till I See You Again

OK kids. That's it. These early studio tracks have the same raw edge and feel as 61/49. The live tracks, in particular the cover tunes, are raw and spirited and ooze with energy. I will leave it up to Bookies to give a complete review after she gets her copy, which should be no later than this coming weekend. While the overall quality is excellent, there is the occaisional bit of tape hiss or slight imperfections here and there due to the fact that these tapes are over 25 years old and may have slightly deteriorated over time, but to be honest, when I listen to this stuff, I don't even notice anything but the music. To me, this is the Romantics in their early raw and raunchy glory, the way they were meant to sound.  Again, it has much the same feel to me as 61/49. One little note about  "Little White Lies" and "I Can't Tell You Anything" which are noted as "earliest versions". These versions of these two songs were the very first Spider single which was critisized by some as being "too raw" and lacking fidelity. I LOVE these versions, which sound like something straight from the garage!  Just plain raunchy and full of fun.   Of course, all of these recordings are the original lineup of Wally, Mike, Jimmy and Rich.

Sorry bookies, But since you pretty much run this place, I thought I would take the easy way out and  throw it all on your shoulders. Really though, I just kind of wanted your opinion on this whole thing. I will give Wally a call as well when he gets back and talk to him about it, but I really don't think he would mind if some of the trustworthy people here who are longtime devoted fans got a copy of this stuff. What do you think?

Yo Bookies. One more thing. I did not mean to imply that I was leaving it up to you to make copies and send them out. If we go ahead with this thing, I will handle that end of it.

oldfriend, i think it is a GREAT idea!!!
i just didnt want to be the one to make any decisions that would come back to haunt legally/morally or otherwise.  you were right the first time, i think it is up to wally and mike.

Iris, either e-mail me your address or send me a private message. I would really like to get everyone a copy who has been here a while. Again, I really don't think Wally would mind. I know for a fact that a few people from the old days did have a copy of the 8 song demo, and a few of the tunes were released locally on spider records and even nationally on bomp, so it's not like this stuff came out of some vault. It's funny, because guess who else is asking me for a copy of this stuff because he does not have it. RICH!!!!!
