Pet Tales
Apr 21st, 2004 at 7:23pm

ok, i dont know how much interest we will have in a thread to share stories about our pets but we will soon find out.
i am an animal lover and have a bad habit of rescuing strays and such.  at present, we have 3 dogs, 1 cat and a turtle.
i came across this poem that i find truly beautiful and for anyone who has ever adopted a pet from a shelter etc, i think you can relate to it:

"Eyes fearful, paws worn
A sorrowful sight, so forlorn
love they said would be the cure
for the suffering you had endured
so our family grew that day
we brought you home, with us you'd stay
slowly, gently the bond it grew
faithful, loyal, loving true
looking back its so unclear
how we got by without you here
trusted companion, devoted friend
you give and give--it never ends
they said we were a gift to you
but now we know
who rescued who."

I can relate...

Went to the shelter when my daughter was small
The little kittens were playing and having a ball
She picked one out while she held my hand
That $10 kitten now costs over two grand!

Haha?

Billy my "golden child" (because of the cash)

my husband picked him from the pound in college because he (the dog)  pee'd (sorry Iris) right then and there from excitement .
Later found out he was infected with heartworms which is very expensive and intensive treatment.

Over the years ( he of course became "my dog" ) he has

*jumped and ate his way through screens only to sit and want back in
*he nearly od on chocolate and spent the night in the hospital hooked to IV's
*he almost od on a bag of fertilizer
*he ate half a door

and his favorite "trick" was to be sitting on the other side of any fence with no clue given  as to how he did it

Best dog ever!!!  we lost him to cancer a few years ago when he was 10.  He definitely had a cats 9 lives.

I used to have birds...

Greenie, "Boo Boo" Blue and Pastel....

(guess what colors the were?!)

The saddest thing was that 2 of them died while I was holding them in my hands...

If you have never seen a person or animal pass away, it is the saddest thing...

They were shallowly breathing and then literally took 1 final gasp of air-, extended their little wings and then with a bigh "sigh", it was "over".... I tried to keep gently massaging them to keep them from dying... but their little hearts gave in...

I cried because we had them for quite a while...

But I knew that they were at peace.

My hubby and I are strong supporters of local animal charities, even though we bought our dogs from breeders.  Our dogs are strictly pets, though, and they help us each year to raise money for less fortunate animals through local animal walks.   Smiley

Oh, and I have numerous horse stories I could tell, but that would take forever!  I will say that my favorite horse that I ever owned sadly shattered his fetlock while out playing (years ago) and had to be put down.  He was loved very much by everyone at our barn, including our vet, who made a donation to MSU's vet school in honor of our Windbask.

Ever since I was little, I've been bringing in stray animals, so I can relate to you bookies!

i concur that boris is a nut!!

i know what you mean about liking animals more than people.  when i used to work on the race track and if there would be a spill during a race where a horse and jockey went down, i would always be more worried about the horse.  everyone used to tease me about it.
my reply was "the jockey knew what he was getting into when he chose the career"
"the horse didn't have a choice"

I think it is time I told you guys about my pets.  We have two wonderful Hermit Crabs, Tony Hawk and Ben.  They are really good natured AND we have trained them to fetch the newspaper. (of course we stay really behind on the news as it takes them awhile to make it back up the driveway!)  We also have a goldfish named Orlando Bloom.  I know you are probably thinking that my kids named our pets, but no.  My husband and I were saying to ourselves, "what can we name this hermit crab.....oh yeah Tony Hawk!   And let's name this goldfish after a movie star....hmmm....Orlando Bloom!"
So, as you can see, it is really a zoo around here!! Grin
Actually, my 7 year old has allergies, and can't have a dog or cat, much to his dismay.

Spaying & neutering is a little difficult when you have birds. You need to put them under a microscope to determine their gender.  LOL

If you can start the day without caffeine,
If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,
If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,

If you can eat the same food everyday and be grateful for it,
If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time.
If you can overlook it when those you love take it out on you when, for no fault of yours, something goes wrong,
If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,
If you can ignore a friend's limited education and never correct him,
If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend,

If you can face the world without lies and deceit,
If you can relax without liquor,
If you can say honestly that deep in your heart you have no prejudice against creed, color, religion or politics,
Then, my friend, you are almost as good as your dog.

how sad and sickening:

BY NHIA LEE
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER

It was supposed to be a house party in Warren, or so a young woman thought.
She went to the house of boyfriend and girlfriend Dustin Kleiner and Christie Clore, both 18.

What she found shocked her.

As she later told police:

There was no music, only the sounds from about a dozen people. And there was no dancing.

Instead, there were dogs, fighting for their lives.

There were four pit bulls -- one had been severely injured -- and people were betting on which dog would come out on top.

Disgusted by what she saw, on May 27 the young woman, whom Warren police won't identify, reported the fighting, a move that launched a six-week investigation.

On Wednesday about 11:30 p.m., police went to the house of Kleiner and Clore and found five pit bulls, including two puppies. One of the adults had old and fresh wounds, police said.

The officers found "dogs sitting and standing in their own feces," said Warren Police Sgt. Louis Galasso.

Inside the garage, police found dog-fighting equipment.

"We found chains on short poles and a treadmill in the garage," Galasso said. "We also found large weights attached to the dog collars."

He said the equipment was used to build the dogs' stamina.

The walls were lined with mattresses to muffle the barks and growls, he said.

A 4-foot-by-4-foot wooden fighting ring also was found in the garage, said John Courie, Macomb County chief prosecutor.

Kleiner and Clore each were charged with three counts of animal cruelty: maintaining a place for animal fighting and possessing equipment to allow animals to fight, both felonies, and animal cruelty, a misdemeanor.

Clore also was charged with possession of marijuana.

Both were arraigned Thursday and are being held in lieu of $500,000 bond each. A preliminary examination is set for July 22.

The five dogs are at the Macomb County Animal Shelter, where they are being kept in separate kennels, said Sue Jeroue, chief animal director.

Hi Gbaby...
My family  had a Lab when I was young-- but we didn't have it for too long-- all I have to say is that they grow quickly...  and are quite strong... I don't remember much because it got too strong for us to handle (we should have opted for a slightly less rambunctious dog...)

This puppy looks more golden retreiver than lab....in fact, it doesn't look lab at all.  The shelter says it is a mix.  I'm not really concerned.  I've had friends with labs.  I don't ever remember them having any problem handling them.  They are rambunctious, though.

LOL.. The few labs I met have been "leaners" and are very strong... then again, I'm kind of afraid of big dogs, too....

My friend as this big black dog that looks like a giant bear large and wooly-- Roxie is so funny--she actually "smiles" at people.   Unfortunately, if you don't know that she "smiles", you might think she's baring her teeth in a threatening way....  The other funny thing is that if you tell her to sit, she will sit right on your foot.... speaking of pets:
one of our dogs recently developed a very severe case of separation anxiety/panic attacks so after trying everything short of me quitting my job, today he goes to the vet to get an exam to be put on doggie prozac.  clonicalm.

Hmmm...doggie prozac...do they make kitty prozac? Or maybe it's me that needs Prozac to live with my cats Grin

Lin,

How many cats do you have now?

We have 2, and I am 'requesting strongly' a pure bred Himalayan kitten for Xmas!

I may need the prozac, too!

thanks for asking gbaby!  yes, he is on the meds.  i dont see any difference yet but they say it could take up to 5 days to start working.  has anyone heard of DAP?  that is something else we are trying.  it is a plug in that emits something called "dog appeasing phermones".

I haven't heard of it, but it sounds like a cool thing.  Let us know how it works.

Yeah, and DAP works to plug holes in plaster or drywall before painting.

Well, it seems I have a special needs cat...Bosworth is diabetic (who knew this could happen in cats!) I'm looking for treatment suggestions...  Lori, do you have any suggestions other than insulen shots?

awww, poor bosworth.  i looked around online briefly but only saw insulin treatment.  what made you take him to the vet to begin with? what symptoms did he display?  i never knew animals could be diabetic either.  i will try to find something on alternative treatment to share with you.

He was drinking a lot of water (it seemed like he was always at the water bowl) and his urine output increased, yes, with his increased intake of course, the output would increase too, but you could have made bricks with the consistency of his output!  Roll Eyes He also started 'weeing' outside the box, which is usually a sign of a problem. I have just heard of an oral med, Glipizide, and I have a Vet appt this week.

I hope your cat is diagnosed and gets the treatment it needs, Tiz.

I can tell you all, make sure to get your critters their distemper shots!!!  I lost about 15 barn cats and kittens in July...and all it took was a sick stray and they were dead in a matter of days.  I had two surviving females I cannot understand how they made it.  I now have a new litter of kitties in the barn that are 3 wks old but I haven't been able to see them yet since they're stashed in the loft.  As soon as I get my hands on them, off to the vet they go for shots!

Does anybody here take their pet to work?  I take my lil' pooch Nellie(a Bichon Frise) to work with me every day.  It takes the edge off a bad day.

See ya!

Pirate, that sounds like the kitty stampede on the Budweiser commercials a few years ago.  I can just picture Pirate's Kitty Ranch in Colorado.

I too am an animal lover and have rescued quite a bit over the years. It seems they just seem to find my front door.
Right now we have two dogs + the one in the basement who we are trying to find a home for. We found him wandering w/o collar and no one seems to want to claim him.  In August we found a mother cat and four week old kittens at a park. The mom weighed 1 1/2 pounds and looked like she had not had a meal in weeks. Did I forget to mention the 7 other cats we already had! It is quite a bit of work and also can be quite expensive on the pocket book.
Honestly, I find I sometimes relate to animals better than people. My friends tell me I will end up one of those old ladies living alone in a big house with hundreds of cats. Somehow that doesn't sound all that bad.
I've always felt God just knows who to send the neglected, lost ones too. Hopefully, he will give me a little break for awhile. Wink

teresa,
so glad to hear that you have a heart of gold when it comes to the ones who cannot  speak for themselves.
what kind of dog is in your basement now?
people treat animals sooo, i dont know, like they have no feelings and are just disposable.  my pets are like my children to me.  i couldnt imagine them  escaping then me not going to the ends of the earth to find them. it jjust astounds me that some people really dont care about their pets.
keep up the good works.
we need all the animal lovers we can get!

He looks part hound dog. He has been neutered and knows how to sit so I know he belonged to someone. He is quite a handful and very strong. I'm guessing he is about 1 year old. Of course I want to keep him but my sister tells me I am crazy. I think I might name him Chester.
It shocks me how cruel people are to animals. I have heard some horrible stories. Years ago we had two cats who have since passed. My brother is a landscaper and was out working when someone threw a bag out their car window. He went to retrieve it and found two 3 week old kittens. He brought them to my house and of course I spoiled them rotten for 16 years.
You know, serial killers start out by hurting animals!

Teresa,

I've often said - never trust someone who doesn't like animals.

'Chester' is a great name, especially for a LARGE Hound dog!  Keep him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  If you can...
