Title: New Release in 2012
Post by rockford_boy on Dec 29th, 2011 at 11:50pm
I'm hoping for some new tunes from the band, I know lots of writing and studio work has been done since the last release and there has to be some great music waiting to be gobbled up by our ears!

Yes my friend! This is something I think about almost everyday. We can give The Romantics credit, in that Wally Palmar was busy touring the world with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band in 2010 and 2011. Now that Ringo has a new lineup for his 2012 album, I don't believe that Wally will be part of the new band. With those responsibilities behind him, Wally now has the time and space he needs to work with the other members of The Romantics and put the new album together.

From what I have heard, nothing new is in the offing. I saw last year that Mike was quoted in an online story that new songs are being written and some things were being recorded, but I mentioned it to Brad, and he said he knows of nothing going on, recording-wise. :-/

Since they all live in different cities, maybe it's just too much of a hassle to get together and work up new tunes?

You make a valid point, but there is still a sign of hope. Mike told me back in 2007 that there are basically some songs that had been shelved and could resurface in the future. I assumed he was referring to either demos or unreleased cuts from the "61/49" sessions, because he alluded to the "61/49" album during our conversation. Mike was very positive about these songs and that is a good sign for everyone.

The Romantics have several options they can take, including a 28 song rarities compilation including the long out of print Bomp EP with Tell It To Carrie, which has never been "officially" released to CD or any digital format. Another option would be to release unreleased classic live recordings of a good quality from the 80s or 90s. The other option would be to record a "greatest hits live" CD, which would be professionally recorded and could include about 25 songs.

I realize that the members of The Romantics are each busy, but 2012 is the year for them to make time to work on new releases.

I like your optimism. And yes, there were at least 18 tracks recorded for 61/49, and some of the ones that didn't make it sounded pretty good -- there were sample clips posted on the website leading up to the album's release. I can't recall any of the titles right now, sadly. But at a show in Louisville, Wally showed me a mock-up/demo, and it had 18 songs on it. It was the same artwork they eventually used and everything.

And working backward, there were a ton of good songs back in the '90s that fell by the wayside. I have poorly recorded live versions of one or two, and a demo of one. My favorite was "Tell Me I'm the One;" there was also "Hypnotized," and one I have a demo copy of called "Hot and Bothered." I also remember a song called "Don't Walk Away," but I only heard that one once, circa 1989.

So yeah, they could probably release a "rarities" CD *tomorrow* if they wanted to! I sure wish they would, because I bet the have a whoooole lot of demos and such in the can.

Did you guys ever hear their cover of "Keep on Running" by the Spencer Davis Group? Good stuff. My recollection is that Wally didn't think it measured up to the original, so it was never used.

Cheers,
-Kevin

Kevin, I too remember Hyptonized and Hot And Bothered. I heard them played live around 1988? I thought they were great and could of made it on an album.  I also vaguely remember a song called Cadillac?? It had a chorius of C A D I double L A C.......or was it a cover?

I think that is a cover of an old Bo Diddley tune.
