Title: Jimmy Marinos
Post by domingo on Mar 31st, 2011 at 12:31pm
I would like to learn more about Jimmy Marinos, the original drummer for The Romantics. I am wondering is Jimmy Marinos Mexican American? I have found that there are more Latinos in rock and roll than most people would realize. It's important for young Latinos to have talented artists they can identify with and look up to and find inspiration. Sadly, most kids don't even know the name Richie Valens. As for Santana, I refuse to comment.

My greatest regret was never getting to see The Motor City Rockers. Is Jimmy retired from music altogether?

I had the honor of seeing Jimmy with The Romantics during the 1980s and 1990s. I remember meeting Jimmy backstage at one of the shows in the 80s. We saw The Romantics several times during the 1980s, twice in Houston, once in San Antonio, once in Phoenix and once in New York City. One of the clubs in Houston I believe was called Numbers and it may now be something different. The club in San Antonio was called Daddy's and it's now something completely different.

The shows I saw in the 1990s were two music festivals. I remember one of the shows was in Houston at an outdoor event, probably put on by the city.

I believe that Jimmy is Greek.

Ah ok, he is Greek, I did not know this. Sorry, as a Latino, it is hard to find good musicians in rock to identify with and most people can only think of Santana, which is like having one choice in a communist dictatorship. Jimmy is an incredible drummer and has the showmanship and stage presence to match his drum skills.

The last time I saw Jimmy was with The Romantics in the late 90s and I remember that Seinfeld was still being made on tv. I very much regretted never getting to see The Motor City Rockers, but I don't remember having the opportunity to see them perform in the south or southwest regions of the U.S. Perhaps they toured and I did not see a listing or advertisement for that show. Do you have any photos of what he looks like nowadays or any recent musical projects?

Jimmy still looks rock and roll. Here is a fairly recent picture I found of him wearing a black leather vest. His hair is still very 60s-inspired, but no spiking.

Here is another current picture of Jimmy. One thing that is unique about him is that he always has the rock and roll look, whether he is on the stage or having a low-key night on the town. Notice the black leather never leaves him, he is wearing a black leather vest in this photograph.

Could that be from Mario's in Troy?
