Title: Barona new years  eve show
Post by Rob on Jan 2nd, 2009 at 12:29am
Hey all, just a quick review of last nights show at the Barona Casino. The whole thing was sort of weird all the way around. The casino  set up the stage literally in the middle of the casino so that you had to jockey for position around slot machines. We missed A Flock of Seagulls, as they came on first. The Romantics came on to a fairly enthusiastic crowd at about 1030. They looked and sounded great as usual for about a 45 minute set. All the hits were there....the only surprise was a rockin version of Stone Pony, with Mike Skill doing a great job singing lead. I have to say I have never heard this song in the live set for my 25 plus shows going back to 1984.  Wally was sportin a goatee, and Brad Elvis was in top form as usual.  It was hard to get into it like I would have liked, with the strange configuration of the setup in the casino.

Berlin were the headliners. Props to them as Teri Nunn looked and sounded awesome. They did a great job, and they got to do all the usual stroke of midnight stuff which pumped up the crowd.

I'm glad you all are agreeing how great Stone Pony sounds live.  I hope they keep it in the set!

Rob--got any photos of Wally's goatee?

I will try and see if anyone had a camera that night!  Can you believe that I didn't take any photos at all and I was there?!!!  Also, no alcohol served at the casino at all!  Imagine that!!!!

Hey Solodka...didn't know anyone else was there! Did the show seem as odd to you as it did to me? Yes, the no alcohol thing put a damper on our New years celebration! We did sneak a couple of flasks in though :) I live about 30 minutes from the casino. The reason for no alcohol is because the only access is up a windy, two lane mountain road. I believe that was part of the agreement when it was first built.

Well, I wish I would have known you were on the my left!!
Odd for sure!  It was because of those compulsive gamblers who didn't want to leave their machines for a second!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought cameras weren't allowed in a casino? You probably would have gotten taken out by some big burly bouncer who would have picked you up and carried you away... LOL

No alcohol in a casino... but did they allow cigarettes? I can't imagine a casino with no booze OR cigarettes... surprised the gambling was allowed! LOL

I think the reason for not serving alcohol was because the casino was up a very steep winding hill.  Going down that hill intoxicated has led to some fatalities!  I guess they don't want to be responsible for another!  Plenty of smoking going on!
Hmm...... being carried off might have sounded like fun!  And by the way, I have taken a few pictures in casinos in my lifetime!  Secret is to be quick and discreet! ;)
