Title: 61/49...three years later
Post by CyberCat on Nov 30th, 2006 at 6:25am
Y'all have probably gotten your 61/49 CD by this point, but I just got mine!!!! I know, three years late...this is so exciting for me. I feel like a giddy teenager again. It's hard to get Romantics music around here!

I've never found a song I didn't like on any of my Romantics cassettes, records or CDs I have. I'm really enjoying New Kinda Pain, Paint the Sky and Still We Remain...so cool!  ;)

Rejoice with me! I finally got it!

Are you going to make the show in Edmonton then?  That would really make your day!!!!!!!!  PS, first time I heard someone who lived in Canada say "Y'all"! ;)  Sounds like you grew up around Johnny Depp! :)

what part of canada are you in?  close enough to make the show friday?

anyhow, glad you finally got to have your own little piece of the romantics.

This album really is so good that it's a shame some major label didn't pick it up and really push it. So many people rave about the Detroit garage band scene. There are a few good bands, but a lot of them are just a bunch of hype like the White stripes. 61/49 is better than any of the releases that I have heard come out from these local garage bands. There may be a couple of real good tunes and the rest is just a lot of filler from what I have heard from the local garage scene. 61/49 is a great listen from start to finish. Not one song would I consider filler. A lot of bands just recently seem to be finding much of the great 60's music and feeling it's influence. The Romantics, especially the live shows, always had that touch of Kinks/Yardbirds/Pretty Things/Stones/Small Faces show in their music. 61/49, in my opinion, shows more than any other Romantics album, the true roots of Romantics music. That is because someone like Pete solley wasn't there to mess it up and the band had the final say on what it was going to sound like. From the time I first met Wally, he had always loved the British invasion music (as I likewise did), and it shows on 61/49.

I truly think that 61/49 is the best release I have heard in 20 years. I still listen to it just about everyday. Our band has borrowed from that record and the self titled record more than anything including the Yardbirds and the Pretty Things Who and Beatles. The problem with the industry is the plastic pop sound thats out there ala American Idol.
The labels don't know what they want and truthfully they are in trouble. Everybody is downloading and the distributors are on the ear right now. The Romantics need to go digital downloads so everyone can access their music. It's a information age and not an industrial age anymore people are lazy they want everything at their fingertips. Besides they don't get any help from their promoters NONE !! Ok  I'll get off my soap box but the 61/49 disc is GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NUFF said !!!

Solodka,

I love Johnny Depp! 'Ya'll' is my way of addressing the group as an entire unit. I think it sounds better than "You guys".

Bookies,

I live in Nova Scotia. Unfortunately, I don't have the opportunity right now to get too many places, but someday I've got to get to a Romantics concert. I know I won't be disappointed!

Just reminds me so much of the South when I hear that expression!  Kind of like "pop" in the midwest!  Johnny Depp grew up about 20 minutes from where I grew up most of my life in FL~ :)

LOL...

From what my hubby's told me, the proper way for someone from Hamtramck (at least back in the 80s or so) to address a group is "Yous guys"... LOL -- Maybe Wally can confirm (or deny) that that is the case...

Pirate, you are so right! My hubby always indulged my love of the Romantics over the years... :-)  However, once he heard 61/49 (and their updated versions of their older songs played live) he is now a convert and a Romantics fan, too! ;-)

I find it hard to make it through a day without listening to "61/49".  This tune at once fulfills the desire to hear something old and something new at the same time.  It's like hearing "Jail House Rock", "Lucille", "I Want to Hold Your Hand", "Last Time", "Glad All Over", "You Really Got Me", for the very first time.  It's fresh and old at the same time.  How do you do that????  Gotta be a genius.

61/49 is an excellent recording.  I was really blown away when I first heard it.  The Romantics are obviously still very relevant.  Hopefully there will be another record before too long.

Hard to believe we are coming up on four years since the release of 61/49.  Back in the day the band released their first four albums in four years (1979-1983). They must have been the hardest working band around in those days!

Hope something new sees the light of day in the near future.  Sounds like Little Stevens Underground Garage label could be a possible player.....

They have still been recording on a regular basis, it's just that a lot of the material hasn't been released.

Great album.  I've been listening to it quite a bit of late.  The guys sound hungry, edgy, kinda mean.  The fact that it's getting very little airplay is a huge compliment from the record industry.  It means they don't consider it in the same class with Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, which can only be taken as a HUGE positive.

It also doesn't sound like the 23 bands that sound like Pearl Jam or the 12 that sound like Matchbox 20.  Between them and the blonde thing, there isn't much room left.

My favorite song has changed several times over the past three years.  Right now it's Out Of My Mind.

i sure hope someday soon in the future they find a way to release some of the new material....so many of us are hungry to hear some new releases to go with all the great songs they have already.

This album still gets regular play at my house. The more I listen to it the better it sounds. I really can't get over how good this album really is. All the great British Invasion influence is here, and if you like the early Stones, Kinks, Yardbirds, Small Faces, and Pretty Things(coming to the Magic Bag in April) as I do, this album will get regular listens in your house as well.

Great release and even better live. Not many bands can pull that off today, oh and by the way the group does live shows with nothing on their vocals. Just raw Wally, Coz and Mike. That is quite impressive, and no silly backing tracks.

61/49 is a listening tradition. 4 years have gone by and still feels fresh. still will always look forward to that next album. as we crave it there previous release continues to keep us humble.  "love this band"
