Title: Romantics "hearings"
Post by pinkbubelz on Oct 17th, 2006 at 7:30am
Instead of "sightings", I just couldn't resist posting some places I've heard the Romantics.

I flipped on WJR AM 760 in Detroit this morning (at about noon) and accidentally tuned into the Rush Limbaugh show--all of a sudden, I noticed that they were playing "Talking in Your Sleep" in the background (it was really soft, but the second I heard it, I recognized it--I had to turn the station way up to actually confirm what I was hearing!)  I have no idea what his topic of the day was, (I'm not a fan), but I thought it was interesting that they chose a Romantics tune to play behind his intro!

Out beloved Romantics are everywhere!!!

While at King's Island this last weekend for Fearfest (it was a blast), we were eating some pizza and burgers and sipping some beers in the huge indoor pavillion where they had the college football games on the giant screens. When they broke for commercials, I heard "What I Like About You" playing. I couldn't see the screens real well because I was in line getting some more Amber Bock, but I think a hotel chain or a car company is now using the song in their commercials.

Hey..get with it ...the Hampton Commercials have been running for months now!!!!!!  Where have you all been?

It is a regional commercial, thus, haven't heard it in my neck of the woods, and I'm sure many others haven't either  ;)

Get with it? HUH?
"What I like About You " is everywhere which is a good thing. In Cleveland I was filling up my gas tank and bada bing "What I Like About You" is playing on the speakers. Who knows if they get free hotel rooms..............
Thank God ,"What I Like About You " lives forever thats the song that hooked me as a little kid. The local sports talk guy in Cleveland WKNR Greg Brinda from 9 am to 12 pm everytime he goes from commercial and back to taking calls "What I Like" is playing behind him speaking. So it is quite confusing to what car commercial has it to hotels to movies and tv shows...It's just way cool !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey trikfan, thanks for the heads up.....but I can't find any words from the Romantics on there--the only tour diary I can find is from Powerman 5000.   :-/   Can you give us a more specific link to the page?

Thanks.

If you go towww.billboard.com and put The Romantics name in the search engine, or Tour Diaries and this is what you get:

The Charms
The hotel employee describing how to get to the room sounded almost identical to Bo Diddley giving backstage directions to Spinal Tap, minus the "short jog" part.
Oct 16, 2006 - Billboard - Ellie Vee and Ethan Jon Kreitzer

The Romantics
During travel time, we entertained ourselves on the bus and made up rude English pub names to pass the time, all the while eating Twilla's delicious chocolate chip cookies with milk.
Oct 11, 2006 - Billboard - Mike Skill and Brad Elvis

The Charms
Fargo, North Dakota has been invaded by the traveling rock and roll circus. We're living on the bus for a couple days between Seattle and Minneapolis.
Oct 09, 2006 - Billboard - Ellie Vee

The Rolling Rock And Roll Show
Stay up to date on many of the bands playing the Rolling Rock And Roll Show with Billboard.com's cache of tour diaries.
Sep 13, 2006 - Billboard - Presented By Little Steven's Underground Garage A Go-Go

Hope that helps! ;)

Heard a very, very brief piece of "What I Like About You" in an advertisement for VH 1's movie, "Totally Awesome", which premiers on November 4th.

Don't know if it is included in the soundtrack, but might be a goof to watch! :)

At my conference this week, we had a "beach party" theme for the after-banquet party....
Of course, I made my usual request for "What I Like About You".... never mind that only 2 people were on the dance floor during that song-- I HAD to dance!!

Title: Re: Romantics "hearings"
Post by solodka on Nov 12th, 2006 at 3:11am
And who were you dancing with?????????????? ;)

one of my co-workers--it was a work conference at the Grand  Traverse Resort....

Such a bummer it would have been much more fun to dance with my hubby!
(They had an old Frankie Valley & Annette Funicello movie with Don Rickles playing--it was funny to see it projected on the screen--they had 1 scene with these people dancing with 2-person sweaters (i.e. a guy & a girl wearing some kind of giant funky sweater).... Hysterical....

Title: Re: Romantics "hearings"
Post by solodka on Nov 20th, 2006 at 9:33pm
Brew, your ears need to be checked and tuned!  According to what I have been told, because I don't know a thing about music and never will proclaim to, "What I Like About You" is in the Key of E.  But we might want to defer to Oldfriend for sure!!!!!!!!!  By they way Brew, is your guitar tuned to low?  Is that what you are going by?

Title: Re: Romantics "hearings"
Post by BrewCity on Nov 21st, 2006 at 1:55am
My guitar actually is tuned low....something I picked up from the grunge boys.  I am a novice musician at best, so I am not in any way disputing the answer to the contest.  I just gave it my best shot.

Title: Re: Romantics "hearings"
Post by Kevin64 on Nov 21st, 2006 at 6:07am
My first guess was going to be "What I Like About You",but I really wasn't too sure because it has been so long since I played harmonica with a band.It took me a while to clear out the "musical cobwebs" in my memory, but it goes something like this.
If the song is in the key of E,you use a key of A harmonica.
If the song is in the key of A,you use a key of D harmonica, and so on,and so on.....
I figured it out looking at a set list and playing the songs on my guitar. When I saw that Devil In Me was in the key of A,I took a shot !! Simple,eh?

Title: Re: Romantics "hearings"
Post by solodka on Nov 21st, 2006 at 9:37am
You make it sound so easy!  I will be trying my best to learn now!  I'm sure it won't be that simple to play! ;)

Title: Re: Romantics "hearings"
Post by jonnie2224 on Nov 21st, 2006 at 10:47am
Yep "What I Like About You " is in the Key of E.....when you play harp the harp you choose is four notes up on the scale...for instance "devil in me " is the key of A so you play the harp against the A note with a Key of D harp. "what I Like About You" is in E so you play an A harp. Guy's like Bob Dylan when he played in the key of A some time he played an A harp. You can do just about anything as long as you know your music theory.
Hope this helps !!!

Last night Alice Cooper played "What I Like About You" on his radio show. He said that he "really likes those boys from Detroit". He mentioned some of their other songs as well, in particular "Talking In Your Sleep". I shot him off an e-mail to tell him about 61/49 and what a great album it is, which I am guessing he has never heard. I suggested that he play a track from that album on his show, since Alice loves the original british invasion and 61/49 has some great british invasion influence. We'll see what happens.

I saw an Esurance insurance commercial about a week ago, and they played What I Like About You through the entire commercial.  I'm sorry that I can't remember the date/time/channel.  It was probably during a Tiger game, though.

I think that when I'm 100, I will still LOVE "What I Like About You"... :-)

I heard what sounded a lot like the opening guitar for What I like About You on some commercial, but I can't remember which one-- it kept looping in the background... (no lyrics, though.)

Here's a weird one......There is a Top-40 radio station here in N.Y. that I don't normally listen to,because quite frankly I despise today's top 40 music.I do turn it on at 3:00 because The Rocky Allen Showgram comes on,and they are very funny.Anyway, every Friday at 3:00 before the show starts they play 3 second snippets of songs that have the word "friday" in them.Somewhere in the middle of these snippets I hear the voice of Wally Palmar singing "Oh,Friday......" from the song" Friday At The Hideout" off of National Breakout.Either the person at the station googled the word Friday,or is a Romantics fan, because only die-hard fans like us know that song.I thought that was pretty cool because it's one of my all-time favorite Romantics songs.

Title: Re: Romantics "hearings"
Post by oldfriend on Feb 22nd, 2008 at 9:49pm
I wonder if he googled it. Iwould think the original version by the Underdogs would pop up first. Yesterday I heard the 61/49 album-in my house while I was having breakfast. That album seems to end up in my cd player quite often.

No, I don't think you have to listen too closely to tell its not the Romantics.  It's an elevator music version of "What I Like".  Truly awful, but if the Romantics are being paid for it, it's ok!

Not exactly a Romantics hearing but is that Come See Me that I hear breifly in the new Budweiser commercial?

If so, I cannot help but think that it is their continued use of the song in their set list that helped revive this song.
