Bad news on the CD/DVD thing -- in the latest press release I got from Legacy, the Romantics aren't even LISTED! Maybe that doesn't necessarily mean it won't come out, but it doesn't appear to be coming out with the first batch of releases.

Watch for tour dates to be announced soon.

RICK SPRINGFIELD – We Are the ‘80s (RCA/Legacy)

LOVERBOY – We Are the ‘80s (Columbia/Legacy)

EDDIE MONEY – We Are the ‘80s (Columbia/Legacy)

THE BANGLES – We Are the ‘80s (Columbia/Legacy)

BOW WOW WOW – We Are the ‘80s (RCA/Legacy)

A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS – We Are the ‘80s (Arista/Legacy)

SCANDAL – We Are the ‘80s (Columbia/Legacy)

See? No Romantics listed at all. Rather concerns me ...

Solodka?  Wally?

What's happening?   :-/

It's looking more and more like Oldfriend and his trusty Father's Day burner version will drop way sooner than Sony's half-assed DVD (or not) release.  Even if it is a Christmas present.

Title: Re: ROMANTICS DVD

Regarding the tour, we knew that wasn't going to happen.  Regarding the dual disc, I believe it is not going to be a duo any more!  But you know, they way everyone changes their mind every other second, you just never know until it comes out!

In Wally's words:

"This is the best thing that could happen.  This way, at least we won't be lumped in with the stupid, "We Are The 80's" reissues.  Maybe Sony will find it in their kind hearts to release another Romantics compilation instead.  We would have liked nothing better than parading around the country promoting ourselves in our "We Are The 80's" T-shirts.:

PS

"After all, I am the 80's and please, Hit Me Baby One More Time!"

Title: Re: ROMANTICS DVD
Post by BrewCity on Jun 2nd, 2006 at 5:04am
Hopefully, reissues with some different stuff on it.   :-/

And, Wally, you can still parade around in your "We ARE the '80's" T-Shirts.  We will understand.  But you are going to have to Mullet-up those hair styles if you want the full effect.

i dont know about we are the eighties and not wanting that on your wings as the romantics stride to grow but as a long time fan......reguardless if they call it we are the eighties....the quest to have such a collection of a time in our lives that the romantics were rocking and we were watching. that  collection of that period of time of this band dvd/cd.....adds a closer of that period of time reguardless of what they title it. im so glad that old friend has been a great dad we is being rewarded with a burner and stepping up to share his collection...gives us something to look forward too.

I received another Legacy release schedule again yesterday, and again the Romantics were NOT listed -- they were also not on the "Bumped to a Later Date" list. I fear this CD/DVD/whatever may never see the light of day. I hope I am wrong, but ... here is the release info copied directly from the e-mail I received:

I happened to see some of the other releases in this series at Walmart and stopped to look them over.

Do you know what's included instead of music videos of each featured artist?   Space Invaders !!!!  That's right, they dusted off that old crappy game and included it on each CD.  I think the music video portion has been scrapped for all the releases.

Nothing like branding a group or singer an 80's relic by packaging them with an outdated video game!

It's probably for the best that the Romantics release hasn't come to fruition.

OK. This part is kind of embarrassing, because I ordered something from QVC. (Don't laugh). BUT!, what I ordered is a DVD burner! This particular model is extremely easy to use. Hook up the VCR to the burner inputs, hit play on the VCR, and hit one button to record on the burner. That's it. Records DVD+ or - or even rewrightables. It supposedley will even take an analog tape signal and convert it to a higher definition copy, actually improving somewhat on the original copy, which is cool because a couple of things I want to put on this DVD are a little rough, but definitely watchable. As soon as this bad boy arrives, I'll take a day to hook it up and the first DVD I make WILL be a Romantics compilation. I also will put the Rockin On The Riverfront show on DVD because that was an awesome show. WOO HOO! Christmas comes early at my house!

Oldfriend-- nothing wrong with QVC if you get something you need (and like!)
I hope your DVD burner works!!! :-) If it does, let us know-- I'm looking to get one...(again) and will keep my eye out for the one on QVC.
Did you get it online or off of the TV show?

The last DVD burner my hubby & I bought was a waste of $99...
and then, @#$%!%!! Wal-mart wouldn't even allow me to exchange it when it didn't work.

I can't stand the Wal-Mart by my house. Their customer service dept. has no concept of how to treat people.
Of course, it was my own fault for not bringing it back right away when we got the faulty one, but the point I tried to make to them is that it never worked from day 1
(and it was the 2nd one we had exchanged)--although I knew that it was after the exchange deadline, I was not asking for
money back (it was listed at $149 and I told her we paid $99 on sale) and I just wanted a DVD burner that was working.

Instead of just politely explaining to us (which is what I had fully expected) that it was their policy not to take it back,
she basically acted like a b**** and treated us like we were trying to pull a fast on the store. Not exactly customer service....
Put us on the defensive and made me very angry and now I won't ever set foot into that Wal-Mart again, no matter what kind of "deals" they may have.

Sorry for the rant...but sometimes you just need to vent!!

Mayhaps we need to make a modest contribution to Santa to make sure oldfriend gets a dvd burner for Christmas.  I would love to see anything oldfriend has of the Romantics.  I have a VHS tape of the Romantics playing "Talkin in Your Sleep" and "Rock You Up" on Band Stand.  Get this!!  The *&#@!!* vcr I recorded it on had a switch to disable the audio!!!!!!  Yep, I don't have the audio.  damn!!  The only thing I remember was Wally telling the audience how many days the Romantics toured each year.  As I remember it was in excess of 372 days a year.  Man it was great being a Romantics fan in the 1980's.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!! This cheap piece of crap "Lite On" DVD burner took a dump!! It freezes up at random times and then the only way to get it going again is to unplug it and plug it back in which ruins the DVD you are trying to record. I wasted 3 DVDs this weekend trying to make copies of some stuff. I'm sending it back this week but now I am back to square one and have to buy a new one. No more cheap off brands. The next one will be a Sony or another name brand.

Title: Re: ROMANTICS DVD
Post by pinkbubelz on Feb 21st, 2007 at 3:55am
hey oldfriend.
I got a cheap DVD recorder at Walmart--it did the same thing-- and what really made me mad was that they wouldn't exchange it (even though 2 of the same DVD burners were exchanged and NEITHER worked.)  It was the worst $100 I ever spent (and unfortunately, can't recoup....)

We forked out a little extra around the holidays and our new DVD burner seems to work really well. :-)

I've got Imovie and Idvd-- Maybe you and I should get together sometime to see if we can get something to work!

Title: Re: ROMANTICS DVD
Post by Pac-Man on Feb 21st, 2007 at 7:24am
A little piece of advice.  Buy a Plextor or ASUS.  They are by far the best and most reliable burners IMO.  I have 3 burners and all work great.  You also want some good burning software as well (Nero for example).  8-)

Title: Re: ROMANTICS DVD
Post by oldfriend on Feb 21st, 2007 at 9:16am
While I do have a dvd burner on my new computer(don't know how to use it), the dvd burner that died was a stand alone unit that I just patched in to my line of vcrs and another dvd player. On a better note, before it died, I did manage to make a dvd of the Romantics "Rockin On The Riverfront" show. It came out great. At least I have a master copy of that now, and when I get a new unit, I can make copies for the people here right from that master copy. I was trying to put together the Romantics compilation that I want to make when the stupid burner froze up and died. When I get the new one, that will be my first project.

Title: Re: ROMANTICS DVD
Post by Pac-Man on Feb 22nd, 2007 at 6:57am
I have thought about getting a stand alone unit as well as transfering stuff from VHS is much easier with one of those units but I haven't looked into them much.  I have transferred a few VHS tapes to my computer and burned them to DVD but the process is much longer but does work great when completed.   8-)

Title: Re: ROMANTICS DVD
Post by PIRATE on Feb 24th, 2007 at 12:14pm
no doubt...when it comes to reliable recording or burner a good brand is needed. the inexpensive vhs recorders then the cd to dvd just dont seem to last long or have problems from the start. that just may go for anything. good luck old friend.

Checked the Sunday ads and I have my eye on a Panasonic burner that is on sale and got a high rating from Consumer Reports. I intend to get one in a matter of a few days. Then it will be a matter of reading the manual and figuring out how to use it. One nice thing about the last one was that it was all one button functions, but what good is consumer friendly operation if it breaks in a matter of days. I think Panasonic is a pretty reliable brand.

Yes, Panasonic is a pretty reliable brand. If the unit you're looking at is the Panasonic DMR-S15, than it's a very decent model. I got one after Christmas  for an extremely good price (around $130 on sale, I believe) and have yet to have any problems with it. One of the good features about this model is that it uses both DVD-R and DVD+R (or DVD-RW, DVD+RW) discs - where some DVD recorders either use only one format, or the other.

I have mainly used it to copy my old VHS only releases - stuff that hasn't yet made it, or never will, to DVD. The only down side is that if that tape is encoded with Macrovision, which more than a few were, than it will not allow you to copy it. Other than that, though, I've got no complaints.

If things go according to plan, I will see Wally today and give him copies of the DVDs. One is a compilation of different things and the other is of last years Rockin On The Riverfront. I must say that I have watched that show several times and it is a blast to watch, especially with all the fine looking women dancing on stage (you know who you are!) during "What I Like About You". The compilation kind of spans their whole career with clips of two songs at the old Bookies Club 870 before they got signed, to a couple of American Bandstand appearances, to some concert stuff from the "In Heat" tour, to several songs with Dave on drums from the "Rhythm Romance" tour, the Good Morning Utah TV show, some clips from the Tastefest show in 2004 and some stuff from the New Years Eve show at the Royal Oak Theater when Rich and Jimmy played  and sang on some tunes. There are some various promos here and there and an MTV interview from the In Heat tour as well. I'll give this stuff to Wally and let him look it over.

No price is too much for the DVD with all the stuff on it you mentioned.  I have NOTHING.

I've been away for awhile, but it looks like the enthusiasm for The Romantics is still running high.

Those 80s bands had their moments, but none of them have put out anything like 61/49 recently.  What a great CD!  It doesn't sound like an 80s band looking to recapture lost magic.  If I didn't know better, I'd guess this album was released before "The Romantics", with a bunch of guys who are still young, edgy, and not eating regularly.  The tracks are powerful, and the Romantics still have a lot to say in the music world.  This CD should have received airplay.  It's better than anything i've heard on the radio in a long time.

My recommendation for more airplay is find a young blonde girl with a drinking problem and bring her into the band on keyboard or something.  You don't even have to plug in her keyboard.  Talent is not a requirement in the record industry.  There's no end of airplay for that type of thing.

A young blonde girl with a drinking problem.......I like it.

But hey, isn't that what we're all looking for?   ;)

I'm not!  But yes, it is funny!  And I even think that a comment like that was brought up recently!  And if they would have, then maybe it would have received more airplay!  I believe that it is played on LSUG on Sirius channel 25.  At least someone has taste!  Let's hope Silvio still lives! ;)  Wally in a short skirt and blonde wig perhaps?  Ah, maybe not! :)

Let's all take up a collection to give to Wally to make sure he does NOT dress up in drag  ;D  We don't
need anymore types like Boy George prancing around stages !!!

If the DVD becomes a reality, I'm willing to pay, Pay, PAY!!

I'm also thinking TV time with this blonde thing.  They get network time!  American Bandstand is small potatoes compared to a little annebriated fun.  Maybe throw in a little jail time to really get it kicked into high gear.

The DVD already is a reality. In fact, it's a 2 DVD set. It has been reviewed by a couple of people here. Waiting to get some OKs before it goes out to other board members. You can already see the 2 American Bandstand shows from the DVD here on the site. Just dug up their third American Bandstand appearance recently which is why it didn't get on the DVD. I may revise the Riverfront DVD at the end to fit this on. The band does "One In A Million" and "Open Up Your Door" on this show.

I have 2 DVDs finished and gave Wally copies a few months back. Haven't talked to him lately. Just waiting to get the word on whether he is OK with it being given out. I think there might have been a couple of older things that he wasn't sure about. As soon as I get the OK from Wally and Mike, I will surely distribute it. There is one person here who already has copies, and if she wants to give it a review here, that is fine with me, and I am guessing that it would be OK with Wally as well. (Hey Wally, nothing like putting you on the spot, eh?)
